In fall 2009, the Department of Linguistics at
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign added Modern Greek to its
extensive list of offerings in Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs). In a happy coincidence, 2009 also happens to be the
year that the biennial International
Conference on Greek Linguistics (ICGL 9) will be hosted in North America
for the first time. This will bring several prominent members of the Greek linguistics
community from the US and Europe to Illinois, since ICGL 9 will be hosted at
the University of Chicago from 29-31 October. We believe that the presence of
so many distinguished linguists of a LCTL in our vicinity represents a unique opportunity which we can use to raise the profile of second
language acquisition of LCTLs, and of Modern Greek in
particular, on our campus. To this
end, we are planning a
one-day workshop on ÔTeaching Greek as a Second LanguageÕ. Given the investment
made by the School of
Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics (SLCL) in teaching languages, there
is already significant interest in the overlap between linguistics and language
teaching among our colleagues and students so we anticipate that a workshop on
the topic will generate interest from several quarters.
The specific aims of the workshop are:
á
to link theoretical linguistics research
with the Foreign Language classroom and explore ways to increase interaction between
the two
á
to provide practical information useful
to all instructors teaching Less Commonly Taught Languages
á
to provide information specific to the
Greek L2 classroom
á
to heighten awareness about the new
program in Modern Greek studies on our campus.
